Welcome to the Type A+ podcast with me, Beth Lawrence.

I'm a certified meeting professional, an award-winning event planner, and a classic over-prepared overachiever.

In each episode, I'll deliver bite-sized tips on organizing your business and life, even during your most hectic times.

So, let's get started.

The first time I was without my smartphone was in 2012 when my husband and I went out of the country on vacation. I was new to the event world and I was terrified to be away for an extended period, thinking everything would fall apart without me.

What I found, though, on the cliffs of Negril, Jamaica, was a freedom I haven’t felt in a long time. It felt like every single day was twice as long and the sunshine was ten times as bright.

Since then, I can replicate that feeling when I go on vacation, but day to day I find it difficult to put down my phone and stay away. Call me a crazy elder millennial, but I understand why the younger generations are starting to forego cell phones.

Unfortunately, as a business owner, I don’t really have that luxury. But I’ve tried to sneak mini-digital detoxes in as much as I can, for the good of my mental and physical health.

From the above:

review published in June 2020 in Dialogues in Clinical Neuroscience noted that frequent technology use has been linked to heightened attention-deficit symptoms, impaired emotional and social intelligence, technology addiction, social isolation, impaired brain development, and disrupted sleep in some cases.

I'm going to share a few tips today for getting away from the screen and immersing yourself in what's happening around you.

  1. Schedule time away from screens

  2. Take breaks from technology

  3. Leave your phone charging downstairs or in another room overnight

  4. Read physical books or listen to audiobooks when possible (insert research about Kindle)

  5. Delete problematic apps

  6. Use Screen Time if you have an iPhone

  7. Preset Do Not Disturb

  8. Set app limits

  9. Downgrade your phone

  10. Create no-phone areas of the home or workplace, or have no-phone dates

Look, technology is here to stay. Social media has become a huge part of our lives and there’s a lot of temptation and conditioning around it. I can’t tell you how often I pick up my phone after just putting it down.
