The Most and Least Valuable Investments for Your Event

In my interview with Byrne Production Services on the Production Value Matters Podcast, I was asked my opinion on the most valuable investment for events, and what is a waste of time and money? My answers may surprise you.

What is the Most Undervalued Aspect of an Event?

Hands down, it’s unprogrammed time. We attend events, largely, to meet and network with others. To make connections, and to increase the chances of strengthening those connections in the future. For this reason, we should be strategically placing networking opportunities, outside of meals and breaks, into the schedule. This can include workshop and roundtable-style sessions, free time with suggested itineraries and the opportunity to plan meetings, among other things. Remember: a 15 minute break doesn’t cut it!

What Are You Wasting Your Event Budget On?

You might be wasting money on your event tech, especially if you’re relying on it as your sole communication for any changes or mass messages to your attendees. According to a recent LinkedIn poll (as well as anecdotal experience from attendees), only 19% of people surveyed said they “generally” allow message notifications on apps. Of course, your attendees may be different, but I’d still assess their appetite for incorporating that particular technological advancement into your event slowly before fully investing. An exception, of course, is when it’s going to be more effective and efficient for your team, and when your community is looking for more experimentation.
